Nails in the Road

i tried to reason with you, and with myself. i tried

to reason with us, with what we could be. i think

that both of us tossed handfuls of nails into the

road as we drove along, it gave us an excuse to

prolong the journey. everything was simple when

we didn’t have to face the truth. when candor’s

ugly, grotesque, and maimed countenance hid

behind a paper-thin curtain. it felt like a goodbye

when we promised that nothing would change,

but the truth had ripped open the foundation,

tilted the moon’s orbit, and now the tide threatens

to drown us altogether. we both have life rafts big

enough for two, but will we choose to share one

or let the currents pull us apart, cutting the

last connecting threads.
