If No Saint Appears

In the crack of the egg
olive oil’s stir, and the sizzle
in frying, there’s a symphony
composing itself. Add a touch
of basil when it is almost
at the end of its song.
Heat up tortillas. Let them burn
a little, because the face of La
Virgen de Guadalupe, or Jesus
might appear on them. It depends
on how worrisome the prayer is.
If the following morning
no saint appears on your toast,
it only means nothing has died.
Pound at your heart, if you must,
as long as you need to, but the love
will still stay alive.

Raquel Reyes-Lopez is slowly reawakening from creative hibernation. She welcomes you to join her in this rebirth. A gentle reminder for her audience, she is carving a no-pressure journey. Pack your survival kits, extra batteries, and flashlight, because sometimes you have to wait until she’s ready to share.
