Who Does The Severing
When the oranges fall
is it the weight of the fruit
or that the lifespan of the orange itself is over
and the tree lets go
as if death is catching?
Is it an offering
as if the tree knows
we need its fruit
and it doesn’t?
Is it a trade
for protection
and water during drought?
When the oranges fall,
sometimes splitting upon landing,
who does the severing?
When I carry you, asleep,
from the couch to the bed
I think if it wasn’t for gravity
I would hold you until morning.
