To Kindness
To Kindness,
In a person, in a name
there is only appearance.
Dark hair, eyes; of blue or grey,
or perhaps the shaded depth of the olive
branches by Venetian rivers.
The appearance of long hair,
the appearance of Daphne;
a child seeking refuge and companionship.
Of Apollo, a victor, losing to loves foolish
and cruel strikes through harsh winds.
There is only ever in a name, blue eyes.
Blue eyes and the image of a desperate chase,
a desperate, most desperate, and human desire
for love, to know more, always,
than one's name.
There is such a subtle kindness,
sublime and giddy laughter,
the warmest of children
through your eyes.
Bid me not of ill intention,
but allow a grateful and appreciative
recipient of your gaze, a friend,
to say – “I thank you”
through a language you may understand,
with words that you may read.
There is in a name only hair and eyes,
blue, green, a shaded tree.
But with the strength and desperation
of the Ruler of the Sun,
I shall declare your eyes to be kind.
Declare, in spite of brief
and inconsequential acquaintancy,
that in your name resides kindness.
May coming seasons bear you filling fruits,
your labours see prosperous harvests,
let adventures come to you gleefully.
May you know that amidst a garden,
of open and vibrant blooms,
your merit and capacity are unparalleled.
It is in the nature of writers to be dramatic,
so here I lay and declare you
a demigod, son of Apollo,
one whom I shall call Star.
Here I diligently wait for city lights
to part and die so that I may meet
with such kindness once more.
Most admirably,
I offer my gratitude for your allowance
of sunlight once more on this gloomy day.
I offer these excessively pompous writings
as thanks for your name;
it is a beautiful assemblage of letters.
“Thank you”, from a dramatic and
ever appreciative idiot.
who is not creepy, nor in love with you,
but is studying romanticism in college,
and therefore sounds like the embodiment
of an overpowering rose-scented perfume,
let us hope the scent fades with time.
